Welcome to the Aceh Road/Bridge Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Project. Aceh is undergoing a major transformation brought on by the December 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami and subsequent end of a 30 year armed conflict. To better understand the project to rebuild the national highway on the west coast of Aceh, first find out how our project fits into the big picture of this region.
On any given morning, the new paved road on the western outskirts of Banda Aceh will be bustling with commuters traveling back and forth to their activity places. Students will be rushing to schools, workers hurrying to offices and housewives to the market. The street will be even more congested with traders and salesmen who travel and sell goods along the Aceh’s west coast. Driving along the street, one feels the familiar morning street atmosphere: chaotic traffic, honking horns and car smoke.

The long awaited re-start of the construction of the
Section 4 package, a 13 km segment between Lamno and Unga, became a reality as
USAID posted a request for proposals for all interested and qualified bidders
on their website 19 January, 2010. This partially completed section includes
four bridges and 11 culverts.A pre-bid
meeting and site visit will be conducted in February to explain to the bidders
the terms of the contract and to demonstrate on site the scope of the work.
Proposals are due in March with the award expected two to three months
thereafter.

Building The Road
The 2004 tsunami mounted devastation upon a region that had already suffered thirty years of armed conflict. The USAID funded Aceh Road/Bridge Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Project Team is therefore working in an environment of limited infrastructure on every level; physical, economic, governmental and social.
